The Beloit Biologist
Alfred “Roc” Ordman Emeritus Citation
Professor Roc Ordman joined Beloit College in 1977, coming from the faculty of the University of Minnesota. He earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed his undergraduate studies at Carleton College.
At Beloit, he helped establish and then served as chair of the biochemistry department. His teaching has included leading student seminars in Israel and Egypt, and his sabbatical projects have taken him to Switzerland as well as locations across the country.
His research interests involve nutrition and mechanisms of aging, obesity, cancer, and the use of vitamin C and its effect on cataracts and brain trauma. He has served as a visiting professor at Rush Medical College at Rush University, worked on sequencing the human genome at the University of Utah, and researched chemical carcinogens at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research in Madison, Wisconsin, among other projects.
Professor Ordman was selected as a W.K. Kellogg Foundation National Fellow, served in the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Service Corps, and was appointed to the board of directors of the Wisconsin-Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, which provided aid and support to Beloit’s partner city in Nicaragua.
