LEDs - Light Emitting Diodes

A wide range of energies can cause electrons to be excited from the valence band to the conduction band (absorption; figure shows electronic transitions, A, and corresponding absorption spectrum, B).

Emission Spectrum

Excited electrons will drop from the bottom of the conduction band into the top of the valence band with the emission of light with a very narrow band width (emission; figure shows an electronic transition, A, and corresponding emission spectrum, B).
