An insert describing DNA extraction from animal and plant tissues appeared in the March, 1999 issue of the Journal of Chemical Education . The insert is entitled "Liver and Onions: DNA Extraction from Animal and Plant Tissues". This insert contains information for both students and instructors. It describes to the instructor how to integrate the activity into the classroom and lists all the key materials required to perform the experiment. For the students, there is a detailed description of how to remove the DNA from the cell nucleus and precipitate it for further study.
