DOW/MIT ACCESS Program

We are writing to ask for your help in spreading the word about an exciting program hosted by the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. The DOW-MIT ACCESS Program is a weekend-long symposium aimed to expose underrepresented minority students to the benefits of a graduate education in the aforementioned research areas. This 6th annual event, taking place on MIT’s campus October 24th and October 25th, is an interactive and informative symposium that has proven to have a lasting impact on its past participants.

Over half of our ACCESS alumni are now enrolled in graduate programs across the country. We hope you will encourage your students to apply to this program as we continue to work toward increasing the number of under-represented minorities in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science.

Please forward and post this linked announcement and poster to your colleagues and students:

Conservation, Leadership and Public Policy Opportunity

Are you interested in conservation, leadership or public policy? Apply to be part of the Conservation Leadership Corps, a group of high school and college students brought together by the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation (WWF). Training occurs over three weekends and is provided by professionals from the public, non-profit and public sectors. Students write conservation resolutions to present to the board of the WWF which, if passed, will be adopted as official policy. You do not need to have any prior experience with resolution or policy writing.

All expenses encountered from involvement in the program will be paid for by the WWF and each student will receive a $250 scholarship at the end of the program in April. Although the application says college freshman and sophomores should apply we encourage people currently in their sophomore year (who will be juniors when the program takes place) to apply as well. Applications are due by May 16, 2014. Candidates will be notified of selection by June 1, 2014.

I am a student currently taking part in the Conservation Leadership Corps and would be happy to speak with interested students further. If you have any questions about the program or application please feel free to email me, Emma Keese, at keesee@beloit.edu

More information can also be found on the website:http://www.wiwf.org/consleadershipcorps.php

Special Seminar

“Combating Bacterial Antibiotic Resistance: Inhibitors of Aminoglycoside Modifying Enzymes”

Dr. Kristin Labby – University of Michigan

Candidate for the visiting faculty position in Chemistry at Beloit

Thursday, March 20 at 12:00 noon in SC 402

Pizza at 11:30 in SC 414

Antibiotics have had huge life-saving impacts on society, but the crisis of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is rising, rendering our former “wonder-drugs” inactive. Resistance is an evolutionary process that selects for bacterial strains with enhanced capacity to survive in the presence of antibiotic drugs. Studies of resistance of one particular class of antibiotics, the aminoglycosides (AGs), have revealed the presence of a family of enzymes within many bacteria called aminoglycoside modifying enzymes (AMEs). AMEs are responsible for modification, and subsequently inactivation, of AG antibiotics. Many forms of AMEs exist, some are more clinically relevant than others, but all have the potential to evolve to become key players in bacterial resistance.  Molecules that bind to and inhibit AMEs would prevent the bacterial modification of AG antibiotics via AMEs, allowing the unmodified AGs to remain effective as antibacterial agents. When working at Beloit College, I propose to work with undergraduate researchers to use organic chemistry reactions to synthesize a small library of AME inhibitors based on a previously identified weakly potent AME inhibitor molecule.  Our library of inhibitors will then be evaluated for their potential to block AG modification by AMEs using an enzymatic assay.

American Chemical Society National Meetings

As you prepare for the Spring ACS meeting in Dallas in March, we hope you will also remember that it is time to submit abstracts for the Fall ACS National Meeting & Exposition in San Francisco, August 10-14, 2014. The meeting theme for San Francisco is, appropriately, Chemistry and Global Stewardship. This theme is focused on global aspects of the chemical enterprise related to sustainability of world resources, including green chemistry, the globalization of chemistry, and the responsibilities and opportunities chemists have to serve the broader public. In particular, divisional programming and special themed symposia will cover and discuss the role and interplay of science, technology, innovation, and economic development in world stewardship of precious, limited resources while providing physical and economic security for all world citizens.  The program will include an International Undergraduate Summit on Global Climate Change sponsored by the Division of Chemical Education.

Remember that if you have research that you would like to present at this or other meetings, the Gary and Janice Small Fund is available to help support travel to the meeting.

    Nanotechnology REU

[Beloit students have been accepted into this program regularly since it began.]

I wish to bring to your attention the Nanotechnology Research Experience for Undergraduates (N-REU) Program. Students are very interested in nanotechnology and its research activities cut across most of the major scientific disciplines. I encourage you to bring this summer research opportunity to the attention of your best students by forwarding this email to them. Our program has an 18-year history of providing the highest quality nanotechnology research experience to undergraduates from a broad spectrum of fields and institutions.

If funding is approved, the N-REU Program will be hosted at eleven of the leading nanotechnology university laboratories in the United States. The program will be run much the same as the previous NNIN REU Programs, http://www.nnin.org/reu. Our programs have always received high praise from participants.

Unfortunately, timing is an issue. National Science Foundation funding for NNIN ends soon and we do not expect an announcement for the Next Generation NNIN until the end of February. Funding for this program thus has not been secured. However, we are taking applications for a program in any case -- but we must make you aware that the program may be canceled before March 1. We will know the funding status before any internship offers are made.

N-REU participants will undertake a challenging nanotechnology project working with faculty and staff at the participating institutions, and using the advanced equipment and process resources of available in those laboratories. Our program provides a high level of support from faculty, mentors, and staff to assure that the students have a successful experience.

There are several unique aspects to our program. Students apply once, on-line, to be considered for participation across the participating sites, for approximately 60 internships at eleven major universities. At the end of our program, all the N-REU REU participants will gather at one site for a three-day research convocation where they present their results to their peers. This exposes the students to the breadth of nanotechnology applications researched by their peers and is a formative professional networking experience.

Our program is highly competitive. We expect to receive over 800 applications for our 60 internships. The program is most suitable for students who have completed their sophomore or junior years in science or engineering, and who are interested in a science or engineering career. We especially encourage applications from women and minorities, students from smaller non-research institutions, and students with limited or no research experience.

We encourage you to make this opportunity available to your best students. REU programs such as ours are critical to students wishing to go to graduate school; we think that our program offers a superior research experience and unparalleled opportunities. Opportunities are available across the range of nanotechnology disciplines - chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering.

    University of North Texas REU

The Chemistry Department at the University of North Texas invites applications for our Summer 2014 NSF-REU Program.  The ten-week program will begin on June 2, and participants will be given a $5,000 stipend plus housing.  Funds are available to help defray travel costs to and from the REU site, which is located at the northern outskirts of the Dallas-Ft. Rama Viswanathan has had a letter to the editor published in the December 2nd issue of Chemical & Engineering News:

THE POSTER “ How Chemistry Changed the World [a copy is posted outside SC 413b],” published in the landmark 90th anniversary edition (C&EN, Sept. 9 ), should have included Ahmed Zewail and coworkers’ seminal papers ( J. Chem. Phys. 1987, 87, 2 395 ; Science 1 988, 241, 1200 ) reporting the first recording of the time—on the order of a few hundred femtoseconds— it takes for a chemical bond to break. Zewail and company also detected and measured the lifetime of a hitherto hypothetical species, the elusive transition state.

I am sending this email with announcement of the Franciscan Institute for World Health's Undergraduate, Medicinal Chemistry, Internship Program for the Summer of 2014! We thoroughly enjoyed having Kelsey [Kettelhut ‘13] from Beloit join us in 2012!

Again, my name is Jeffrey Rohde, and I am currently Professor and Chair of Chemistry at Franciscan University of Steubenville (www.franciscan.edu). I invite your students to take part in this unique internship opportunity. The internship is a 10-week, 40 hour/week, intense experience of full-time, collaborative, organic chemistry research coordinated and funded by the Franciscan Institute for World Health (www.franciscan.edu/fiwh). The projects are picked up in real-time and performed side-by-side with AbbVie Medicinal Chemists and myself (a former medicinal chemist for nearly 13 years) at AbbVie’s main research facility [in North Chicago, Illinois, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee].

This internship, now in its 4th year, is designed to give research opportunities to undergraduates at small universities. This internship will give your students a chance to experience the pharmaceutical industry in a unique and fulfilling way that is both humanitarian and educational. Eligible students have or will have completed a full year of Organic Chemistry by summer 2014. Preference will be given to Chemistry majors interested in graduate school or industry, but the internship is not limited to these students. We encourage you to send the attached flier to all your students and ask that you encourage them to apply. Because of the small number of eligible schools, the applicant pool is usually small compared to other internships. Up to ten students will be chosen for summer 2014. We have received wonderful feedback from interns over the years and look forward to another great summer! [For internship and application details see http://www.franciscan.edu/FIWH/internship/]

Thank you for your time in reading this email. Feel free to email any questions you may have and I look forward to applications from your students!

Chemists Without Borders Partners with IdeaConnection to Solve Five Humanitarian Challenges

The search is on to find solutions to arsenic poisoning, contaminated water, and electronic waste hazards. IdeaConnection, an industry leader in open innovation and solving R&D challenges, has partnered with Chemists Without Borders, an organization focusing on solving humanitarian problems, to challenge the solver community to come up with solutions to four urgent challenges affecting the health of millions.

The Arsenic Penny-per-Test Challenge is asking for a simple test to be designed that would detect arsenic levels in groundwater. More than 75 million people in Bangladesh are at risk for arsenic poisoning, and current tests are too expensive to be practical. The test should be able to be manufactured and distributed locally, and must be accurate and reliable.

The Arsenic Removal Water Filter Challenge is looking for a water filter design that would remove arsenic from water to less than 50 ppb (Bangladesh standard) and, ideally, to less than 10 ppb (WHO standard), and must be able to be manufactured as a cottage industry in developing countries like Bangladesh.

The Contaminated Water Testing "Tool Kit" Challenge is seeking an analytical tool kit that would identify major impurities in water. Impure drinking water is a major source of illness throughout the world, and a cost effective, portable and straightforward testing kit could protect millions of people from succumbing to debilitating diseases.

The Contaminated Water Treatment "Tool Kit" Challenge is to design a portable, easy-to-use tool kit for treating contaminated water for some of the major impurities that affect human and environmental health globally.

The Electronic Waste Challenge is reaching out to the global community to design an action plan to alleviate the health and safety risks to uneducated and underprivileged workers in India, China and Africa who extract metals from e-waste. Workers are exposed to dangerous levels of toxins such as lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium and polyvinyl chlorides.

We are appealing to solvers worldwide who wish to contribute their expertise and skills to help solve these critical issues affecting the lives of millions of people. To learn more, please visit IdeaConnection's "Innovation Challenges" webpage at www.ideaconnection.com/open-innovation-challenges/.

For the next 20 months, we also have in place a Noyce Scholarship Program, funded by the National Science Foundation.  The Noyce program provides qualifying STEM graduates with a one-year stipend of $25,000.  Recipients then must teach science or mathematics in a K12 school for two years.  Several of our Noyce Scholars have also been enrolled in the Peace Corps-Master's International program and are now in teaching positions.

This is a rare graduate program that provides a substantial stipend at the M. S. level.  Detailed information about the program is available at http://www.mtu.edu/peacecorps/programs/science-education/.  Typically, a student takes one year of coursework at Michigan Tech, then spends two years in Peace Corps service while earning additional credits and carrying out a research project that leads to a completed M. S. degree soon after return to the U. S.  Students who wish to earn teaching certification can typically do so with little or no added coursework.

The Noyce Scholarship Program ends in May, 2015, so the last year we can provide the stipend to interested students is 2014-15.  Please encourage any STEM majors who are interested in the Peace Corps or teaching certification to consider the program and to contact me if they have any questions.

    Sincerely,

    Brad Baltensperger

    McNair Scholars Program

For those who I have not met yet my name is Nicole Truesdell, and I am the current (and new) Director of the McNair Scholars Program at Beloit College.

I want to recruit more STEM focused students to apply, and be apart of, McNair.  The McNair program is a federally funded TRIO program that works with first-generation college, low-income, and minority students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and wish to complete a doctorate.  At Beloit we are a 2-year program that begins during the second module of the second semester of Sophomore year and ends at graduation.

Students are expected to complete 2 summers of research - one on campus with a faculty member and the second off campus at another institution.  Scholars receive a stipend of $2800.00 both summers, and room and board on campus that first summer.  I also teach two courses - Research Design during the second module of Spring term during the Sophomore year, and a Senior Graduate Application Seminar during the first semester of Senior Year.  We provide GRE prep and GRE test fee waivers, along with funding to present at a national conference.  More detailed information can be found on our website: http://www.beloit.edu/mcnair/

This year applications are due FEB 3rd, 2014 (the application is online on our website) and I would like to make sure we have a good number of STEM students applying.  If you know of any students who you think would be a good fit for the program please send them our way.  I have sent preliminary emails to students who are eligible that are apart of SSS, but we also rely on the recommendations of faculty.
