Beloit a National Leader in Producing Ph.Ds

Two national studies have identified Beloit College as one of the leading producers of doctoral degree recipients in the nation. Both studies, which calculated the proportion of alumni that received doctoral degrees, placed Beloit among the top 20 higher education institutions and the top dozen liberal arts colleges nationally. Over the 10 years ending in 1995, 207 Beloit graduates received doctoral-level degrees. This figure makes Beloit students nearly four times as likely as the average college student to continue studies through to the doctorate. Figures provided by the Higher Education Data Sharing (HEDS) consortium compare the number of Ph.Ds received by the graduates of each college and university during the 10 years 1986-95, with the number of graduates from the institution during the 10 years 1980-89. The time difference reflects the average amount of time required for completion of doctoral studies. The HEDS study placed Beloit 20th out of the roughly 2,000 U.S. baccalaureate degree-granting institutions, including all comprehensive colleges and universities, research, doctoral, and specialized universities, and liberal arts colleges. Among the 165 national liberal arts colleges-undergraduate institutions that grant 40 percent or more of their degrees in the liberal arts field and are restrictive in their admission-Beloit ranks I I th. The results were based on objective data from the National Science Foundation survey of doctoral recipients, the Department of Education's degree and completion data, and the Census Bureau. A second study, conducted by Prof. Gary Glen Price of the University of WisconsinMadison, affirms Beloit's academic excellence and finds further that Beloit ranks fourth nationally in the disciplinary breadth of its doctoral alumni. Both studies of baccalaureate origins of Ph.Ds place the California Institute of Technology at the top of the list. The leading select liberal arts college is Reed College in Oregon.
