Milwaukee School of Engineering REU
Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), in Milwaukee , Wisconsin, is seeking
college students to participate in an innovative research program that focuses
on solid freeform applications in the aerospace, architectural, biomedical,
biomolecular, manufacturing and electronics industries. We are seeking undergraduates
from engineering, computer science and science-based curriculums.
Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) is an important developing technology that
enables the fabrication of custom objects with novel properties directly
from computer data. The basic operation of any SFF system consists of
slicing a 3-D computer model into thin cross sections, translating the
result into 2-D position information, and using this data to control the
placement of solid material. This process is repeated for each cross section
and the object is built up one layer at a time. The additive nature of SFF
techniques offers great promise for producing objects with unique material
combinations and geometries which could not be attained by traditional
manufacturing methods. The MSOE Rapid Prototyping Center is the only
university that has a laboratory devoted to all five commercially-available
rapid prototyping systems - stereolithography (SLA), laminated object
manufacturing (LOM), selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition modeling
(FDM), Z-Corp processing.
Eligibility: To be considered students must have completed their sophomore
year of an engineering, pre-engineering, computer science or science
(physics, chemistry, biology, etc) based curriculum; be enrolled in a
university for the fall term; and be a full-time student with a cumulative
GPA of 3.00 or greater. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents of the United States. Women, minorities and individuals with
disabilities are encouraged to apply. No experience in rapid prototyping is
required.
To apply, send the following information to Ann Bloor, MSOE, 1025 N. Broadway,
Milwaukee, WI 53202. Application materials must be received by Monday, March
10, 2008. Only complete applications will be reviewed.
1. One-page cover letter
2. One-page resume
3. One-page statement indicating your interest in rapid prototyping & undergraduate
research, and why you should be selected as a participant
4. Three (3) letters of reference (at least two from previous or current faculty)
5. University transcripts from each university attended.
All participants receive a $3,605.00 stipend and a travel allowance. On campus
room and board is provided. Visit our website at http://www.msoe.edu/academics/research_centers/reu/ for
more information on this exciting program.

Summer Opportunities
Clemson University Summer Undergraduate Research Program
This NSR REU program offers research opportunities in a wide range of chemistry
and chemistry-related areas. Stipend of $4000, free university housing, and
up to $500 travel allowance. Deadline March 3, 2008. See http://chemistry.clemson.edu/undergraduate/SURP/.
2008 Undergraduate Research Award - Minnesota Chromatography Forum
The Undergraduate Research Award is given annually and formally presented
at the Spring Symposium of the Minnesota Chromatography Forum. The award is
designed to encourage undergraduate students to become involved in scientific
research. Undergraduate students submit proposals for short research projects
(e.g. a 6-week project) in which chromatography or some other separation technique
plays an important role. A panel of judges reviews the proposals and the student
submitting the best proposal is awarded at least $4,000. The recipient presents
his/her research results at the 2008 MCF Spring Symposium.
Who is Eligible?
Eligibility is restricted to any undergraduate student who is enrolled at a
college, university or technical institute and who has the support of an
advisor in the design and the implementation of the project. The deadline
for submission of the proposals is March 7th, 2008.
What Topics are Eligible?
The proposed work may be done as part of a course, such as an Introduction
to Research course, or as a separate independent project. The student is
required to write the proposal, and the work must be conducted under the
guidance of a sponsoring faculty member. Faculty guidance in suggesting a
research problem and formulating the proposal is, of course, expected. Neither
the student, nor the faculty sponsor, need be a member of the Minnesota Chromatography
Forum in order to qualify. The award money will be presented directly to
the student to use as a stipend and for the purchase of equipment/supplies.
How to Apply
Details of the grant application & rules will be sent out on or about January
18th 2008 so this is an early notice if you are planning to do research next
semester. The proposals need not be long (a few pages) and the research itself
should be simple enough to be completed in four to eight weeks of full-time
laboratory research.
I would like to emphasize that there is no limit on the number of proposals that we will accept. Student chances are good - over the last few years we have averaged 12-15 submissions. If you have any questions, please contact me at (952) 929-1996 or by e-mail at DeWayne@AIBLTD.COM

Environmental Alternative Spring Break
SCA and American Eagle have teamed up to host an Alternative Spring in two
of the country's most spectacular parks. Choose a week-long service adventure
in either Padre Island National Seashore or Grand Canyon National Park.
Volunteers at Padre Island will set up a front country camp near headquarters and work together to construct a universal access boardwalk to the beach, while others will set up a primitive camp on the seashore and spend their days constructing an addition to the turtle research ranger station. Session one runs from 3/8/08-3/15/08 while session two runs from 3/15/08-3/22/08.
At Grand Canyon, volunteers will set up camp at Mather Campground on the South Rim and spend their days hiking along some of the Canyon's most beautiful trails while carrying out important vegetation projects, as well as removing graffiti from some of the Park's most important cultural sites. Dates for the Grand Canyon project are 3/15/08-3/22/08 and 3/22/08-3/29/08.
SCA will provide a $400 travel reimbursement as well as food and transportation within the park. However, volunteers must purchase their own travel to and from the airport, as well as bring personal gear such as a tent, sleeping bag, and pad.

2007 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Chronicle of Higher Education release)
A German scientist, Gerhard Ertl, has won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for
experiments showing how atoms and molecules react on solid surfaces-work
that has laid the foundation for the entire field of surface chemistry.
Surface chemistry underlies many industrial processes, including the production
of artificial fertilizers, electronic components, and renewable fuels. It is
also critical to understanding basic processes such as why iron rusts and why
the atmosphere's ozone layer is diminishing (some reactions that degrade ozone
actually occur on the surface of ice crystals). Mr. Ertl, who was born in 1936
and is a professor emeritus at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck
Society, in Berlin, won the prize on his 71st birthday.
2007 IG Nobel Prizes (ACS C&EN press release)
This week, Newscripts is devoted to the SPECIAL WINNERS of the Ig Nobel Prizes,
which honor "achievements that first make people laugh and then make them
think," according to the folks at the Annals of Improbable Research, who
administer the awards.
Aflutter or perhaps aghast, seven of the 10 winners traveled-at their own
expense-to Harvard University to receive their prizes. As always, the awards
were physically handed to the Ig Nobelists by genuine Nobel Laureates, including
Chemistry Nobelists William Lipscomb (1976) and Dudley Herschbach (1986). Awardees
had 60 seconds to deliver their acceptance speech before a "cute-but-implacable
eight-year-old girl" taunted them offstage to the tune, "Please stop.
I'm bored." This year's CHEMISTRY PRIZE went to Mayu Yamamoto of the International
Medical Center of Japan for developing a method to extract lignin-derived vanillin
from cow dung (Aroma Res. 2006, 7, 258). Yamamoto reports that she has "developed
a method for the production of plant polyphenol including vanillin with the
herbivorous animals' excrement as a natural resource of lignin by using a high
pressure and high temperature reaction."
In honor of Yamamoto's achievement, Cambridge, Mass.-based Toscanini's Ice
Cream has created a new ice cream flavor: Yum-a-Moto Vanilla Twist.

On Thursday October 4th, The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee
will be hosting an open house for students interested in graduate school.
This should be a good opportunity for students to learn more about MCW's
specific graduate programs, graduate school in general, and graduate-level
research. This may also be of interest to students who are not yet thinking
about graduate school but who might be interested in summer research opportunities.
MCW offers a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), and this
Open House may provide an opportunity to learn more about research at MCW.
The Open House is 1-4PM, and MCW graduate students will be presenting their research in a poster session from 4-6PM.
Let me know if you are interested in attending and if you plan to drive yourself or would like to travel as part of a Beloit group. Depending on the number of interested parties, we might consider using a Beloit college van for group transportation.

Welcome Back!
As you can see out the windows of Chamberlin Hall, things have been happening
this summer. Construction is on schedule to have the entire building closed
in by December and ready to be occupied next July.
Welcome also to Keven Braun, a 1999 alumnus of the Chemistry Department who is with us for the year teaching 117, 220, and an instrument course. Kevin completed his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona and a post doc at the University of North Carolina. Kevin's office is in 402 Chamberlin.
And to Rongping Deng, our new Instrument and Research Scientist for the Science Division, part of the major 5-year grant that we received from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation. He will be helping with instrumentation and getting involved in projects throughout the Division. Rongping completed his Ph.D. in molecular physics at the University of New Hampshire and post doctoral research in ultra high vacuum chemistry on metal surfaces in the Chemistry Department at the University of Illinois - Chicago. His office is in 405 Chamberlin.

Science Center Update
The concrete block walls for the third level should start going up shortly,
as the second level is finished. Spraying of fire proofing is starting on
the first level. Next week they will be pouring the concrete for the roof
and the mechanical room in the basement.
Marine Sciences
The Shannon Point Marine Science Center at Western Washington University is
offering an unusual program to increase diversity in the next generation
of marine scientists by supporting students to spend two quarters (January
8 - June 13) taking introductory and specialized courses in the marine sciences,
attending seminars and workshops, exploring career opportunities, and engaging
in supervised research. Applications are encouraged, in particular, from
U.S. citizens belonging to groups currently underrepresented in the marine
sciences (i.e. African Americans, Latio/Hispanics, Alaskan Natives, Native
Americans or Native Pacific Islanders). NSF funding covers all tuition and
fees, housing, travel, and a $3025 work-study allowance. Applications are
due by November 13, 2007. See http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~mimsup/index.html for
