The RDAs are set at levels that provide a substantial margin of safety, two standard deviations above the average needs. What is a vitamin? Vitamins are a class of small molecules which we cannot synthesize from food, and therefore must be ingested in the diet or supplements.

Interactions between vitamins, minerals, and medications - There are many interactions between nutrients which can affect their absorption and impact into your health. Many manufacturers and consumers do not realize that improper mixtures of ingredients can have serious hazards. For instance, calcium supplements may lead to zinc deficiency as calcium can block absorption of zinc. Does the form of a nutrient matter, such as chelated minerals, or a particular form of calcium or vitamin C? What about time release pills? Should you take a multivitamin? How safe are they?
