Calcium (see also essay on Calcium Dose) There is lots of information coming out about calcium, both for and against taking supplements, described in the link above. But here are some additional articles of note. Calcium intake and adiposity, AJCN 2003: 77: 281-7. Limited data suggest the possibility that calcium intake affects weight regulation in people. In particular, the report shows that people with the lowest calcium intake are the most likely to be fat. Those consuming the most calcium are the thinnest. Two other clear graphs indicate that BMI (body mass index, which is a measure of obesity) decreases with increased calcium intake. One possible basis for why this happens is that dietary calcium (which has a positive charge) may bind dietary fatty acids (which have a negative charge) in the intestine, and thus prevent some of the fat from being absorbed. TENTATIVE CONCLUSION: CALCIUM INTAKE PREVENTS FAT FROM BEING ABSORBED. |
