EXTENDING HUMAN LIFESPAN One reason to pay attention to nutrition and exercise is that within the next 20 years, technologies are likely to be developed to allow people to live much longer lives. Good health, nutrition and preventive medicine like antibiotics and vaccinations have extended human lifespan from less than 45 in 1900 to much more than 75 in 2000, and many now live to their 90s and beyond. But it will be necessary to reverse physiological aging to extend life to hundreds of years. One of the top authorities on such possibilities is Aubrey de Grey from Cambridge University, whose ideas were explained in the Chronicle of Higher Education on October 28, 2005. Here is the connection to his web site: http://www.sens.org/users/aubrey-de-grey He proposes that many alive today are likely to live to 1,000 years old. |
