Updated: Sept 2004 Notes on various juices, from the book- Beverages in nutrition and health Wilson, Ted. Publisher: Humana Press, Pub Date: c2004. See also beverages. SUBJECT: CRANBERRY JUICE Cranberry juice has a specific flavonoid that prevents bacteria from making fibers necessary for them to adhere to the vagina and cause infections. It is this flavinoid, not the acidity, which makes cranberry juice beneficial. SUBJECT: VITAMIN C UNSTABLE IN JUICE When first manufactured, about half of the vitamin C in orange juice is in the form of dehydroascorbic acid, which is not absorbed from the intestine. The level rapidly drops, and after 4 weeks there is little bioavailable vitamin C in the juice. SUBJECT: GRAPEFRUIT JUICE CAUTION Be careful about grapefruit juice with medications. Causes trouble with many, including statin drugs. |
