EMU OIL
I have been seeing quite a bit of advertising about emu oil and potential benefits forfibromyalgia patients. The claims are for both topical application and orally ingested capsules. Do you have thought or information about emu oil?
The one citation given for emu oil by the sellers is http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12934669, an article
where the work was done at a private institute. In the article, they report on a trial where oil helped prevent inflammation in response to an external irritation. Fish oil, olive oil, and emu oil all reduced inflammatory symptoms from 52 to 70%. So on the basis of the article used to sell emu oil, one could use olive or fish oil, both of which are likely to be less expensive and less allergenic.
A previous article in 1999 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10622168?ordinalpos=12&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
compared emu oil with pig oil, and got similar results with either.
There were a few other articles during the past decade, but those are the two significant ones I found.
My conclusion: 1. There is no point in spending money on emu oil. Olive oil and fish oil are cheaper, better documented, and thus likely to be safer. 2. Internally, fish oil is really beneficial, reduces inflammation. [Aside from the nutritional aspects, should one really support killing emus?] |
