FROM LINUS PAULING
DIET AND OPTIMAL HEALTH MEETING MAY 18-22, 2005
For those with patience, here are my notes from one of the best professional
meetings for M.D. and Ph.D. professionals involved in nutrition professionally.
They have not been edited, and are slowly moving on to the appropriate
web pages of Nutrition Investigator. Any mistakes are my own, but I have
done my best to capture relevant exciting information I learned at this
conference.
Dansinger JAMA 2005 diet study
Atkins vs Zone vs Weight watchers vs Ornish Diet
No differences were found between these diets. People who followed them actively
lost
1-2
kg
in
12
months. Successful dieters who adhered to diet eventually lost 5 kg. Failures
gained 5 kg. Because these diets have substantially different requirements for
consuming or avoiding fat, the study demonstrates that FAT
HAS
NO
EFFECT,
the only
factor to consider in a diet
is
calories.
Weight loss
Goal = try to lose 10% of weight from baseline- NO MORE than that.
Lose at rate of 1-2 lbs/weeks, make effort to lose that 10% over
6 months, then
try to maintain stable weight after 10% loss for another 6 months.
Great benefit occurs after just 5% weight loss, esp sleep apnea recovery,
joint
recovery, GYN condition.
52% of dieters have not benefited after 1-5 years.
1. very low cal diets like liquid Splenda are worst, cause greatest
rebound
2. lo fat Ornish bad, HDL drops, no fish, not lo cal
3. Atkins - jury still out, health risks;
at one year, no significant difference in different types of diets
We have evolved to conserve energy- 16% decrease in energy expenditure
caused by a 10% weight loss
Behavior modification - keys to eating and moving
Manipulate energy density of food choices
KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL DIETING
1. lo cal 2. activity 3. lifestyle changes like take the stairs 4.
