Read below for notes from the book -Beverages in nutrition and health , Wilson, Ted. Publisher: Humana Press, Pub Date: c2004.

pg 27: gain to health from alcohol - 1-2 drinks per day will save men $2,900/yr in health care costs, save women $9,600, not counting that 5-10% may go beyond 1-2 drinks and become alcohol abusers.

pg 60 : CRANBERRY JUICE Cranberry juice has a specific flavonoid that prevents bacteria from making fibers necessary for them to adhere to the vagina and cause infections. It is this flavonoid, not the acidity, which makes cranberry juice beneficial.

pg 88: VITAMIN C UNSTABLE IN JUICE When first manufactured, about half of the vitamin C in orange juice is in the form of dehydroascorbic acid, which is not absorbed from the intestine. The level rapidly drops, and after 4 weeks there is little bioavailable vitamin C in the juice.

pg 101: GRAPEFRUIT JUICE CAUTION Be careful about grapefruit juice with medications. Causes trouble with many, including statin drugs.

pg 119: two servings of tomato sauce cuts prostate cancer by 23%

pg 136: coffee slightly protects from colon cancer

pg 153 - Green Tea protects from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis

pg 184 - caffiene enhances brain and sports performances

pg 199 - herbal beverages suspect, may be toxic and carcinogenic

pg 213 Figure 2 - people who ate most dairy are 80% less likely to be fat; pg 218 - milk is great for health

pg 231 - soy milk is weakly estrogenic, good for those lactose-intolerant; but yoghurt and lactose-free milk may be better

pg 244 An 11% increase in breast-feeding in the US would save $3.6 billion in health care costs annually

pg 275 - liquid calories are worse for appetite control than solid food. Diet drinks don't reduce energy intake. Caffiene and green tea increase energy expenditure.

pg 301 - insulin is suppressed during exercise, so eating sugar then is okay and does not contribute to diabetes. Hydration is important, gives 6.5% increase in performance, sugar gives 6.3% increase, combination gives 12.8%.

pg 332 - bottled water is not always better than tap water. Look for: 1. high enough calcium, at least 400mg/l; 2. Mg at least 400 mg/l; 3. no sodium; 4. fluoride about 1mg/l

pg 372 - many pseudo-juice products have misleading labels. Around the start of the millenium 2000, there was a $16 billion a year industry selling juice-like products.
