Latest results about Resveratrol (Res)- Conclusion is that Res extends healthspan (which is consistent with the NPR report on the Nature paper). There were no hazardous side effects observed. Please read the longer summary here: http://chemistry.beloit.edu/Ordman/nutrition/aln/1109lpi.htm ZINC – Even most ER doctors do not know that an immediate injection of lots o zinc will relieve sepsis almost immediately (Daren Koell, OSU) PROBIOTICS – There are a hundred billion bacteria in your body, 90% of the cells in your body. They have 100xmore genes than your DNA, and the metagenome project investigates all of them, most of which are symbiotic. Prebiotics are fiber, probiotics are bacteria and yeast, and synbiotics include both. A low carb diet reduces healthful Lactobacillus and increases hazardous Clostridia in your colon. Soy is fermented to equol, an anticarcinogen. Fiber is converted by colon bacteria to butyrate that causes apoptosis (suicide) of cancer cells. Polyphenols from berries, walnuts, and wine, and lignans from flaxseed ferment in the colon into anticarcinogens. But obesity and antibiotics modify the colonic microbiota causing hazard. Eating at least a teaspoon of yogurt daily is great for everyone. VITAMIN E - Vitamin E crosses the blood-brain barrier thanks to the alpha-tocopherol transport protein. Tocotrienols are the antioxidant of the 21st century. 400 iu of vitamin E daily blocks specific metabolic events that cause cancer, atherosclerosis, and chronic liver disease. Broiling and frying of burgers and fries produce acrylamide and polycyclic amines that cause cancer. Best food preparation is steaming, next is microwaving, worst is pan frying in oil. LOSS OF HOMEOSTASIS WIH AGING - Curcumin delays this and slows Alzheimer's. Also vitamin D, flavones (in vegetables), are good. Lithium is useful for Parkinson's. VITAMIN C (AA) AND CANCER- Mark Levine discussion - Intravenous AA is used to treat cancer patients. Giving 50 or 75g each time, 3 times per week, up to 20 times, dramatically increases the effectiveness of other chemotherapies. His patients experienced NO side effects from AA. Alzheimer's disease (AD) - Antioxidants, B vitamins, omefga-3 fatty acids, and the Mediterranean Diet all delay it. Transfats substantially accelerate AD. LIPOIC ACID - Taking supplements of Lipoic acid induces expression of Nrf2 gene, which is a transcription factor for 200 antioxidant-related genes. At age 30, we start losing bone mass unless exercising. 50% of bone mass is made during adolescence. A 10% increase in peak bone mass delays osteoporosis 13 years and reduces fracture rate 50%, so get lots of exercise when young to increase peak bone mass.
