SUBJECT: Fall LPI newsletter and vitamin D The Institute of Medicine that sets Daily Values for the US recently issued a statement that people require only moderate levels of vitamin D. This has concerned many people who have begun taking 2,000 IU daily. The person who set the Daily Value for vitamin D, Dr. Heaney, still maintains that 2,000 IU daily is the best dosage for good health, and Nutrition Investigator agrees. See more explanation at the nutrition investigator link. Also this month the Linus Pauling Institute (LPI) Newsletter (one of two NIH-sponsored Centers for Nutrition) was issued. It includes the list of daily supplements the LPI Director takes (including 2,000 IU vit D), discussion of the merits of vitamin E and resveratrol, and concerns about coenzyme Q for healthy people. There are also articles on the merits of flavonoids in beer, on how to increase exercise and reduce obesity in children, and on Bruce Ame’s Triage Theory that supports taking a daily multivitamin/mineral without iron. See summaries at the nutrition investigator link with a link to the full LPI newsletter. On a personal note, I was nearly killed by a hit and run drunk driver on Nov. 10th. The physician and physical therapist told me I would be dead were it not for exercise and nutrition, for instance fish oil preventing inflammation and flexibility and muscles preventing a broken neck.
