Up on the Farm A grim statistic is that farmers have the highest rate of Alzheimer's Disease of any profession. There are several nutrients that are especially implicated in maintaining a healthy brain, and blocking the harmful factors that contribute to the onset of brain trouble. Short answer: Consider 1. 400 iu vitamn E once a day 2. 500 mg vitamin C once in the morning 3. 500 mg vitamin C again at night 4. fish oil tablet or fish twice often (see table below) 5. also [on other pages], think about aspirin, getting enough vegetables or a multivitamin, exercise, and social interactions. Explanation: First is to be sure to get enough vitamins C and E. Alzheimer's is known as a free radical disease, that is it is likely to be caused by the rusting of the brain as you age. Vitamins C and E help prevent that rusting process. Many experts now recommend 400 iu of vitamin E every day. This not only blocks the rusting process, but also helps reduce the risk of heart disease. Vitamin E works in the fat-soluble parts of the body, and vitamin C works in the water-soluble parts. Taking 500 mg of vitamin C in the morning protects the body during the day, but it passes through the body quickly because it is water-soluble, so it is necessary to take another 500 mg of vitamin C at night before going to sleep. This prevents the rusting process during the night. The combination of vitamin C and E will take care of the rusting. It also will probably save your eyesight, because once you have taken vitamin C for 10 years, the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration drop dramatically. What else? Fish oil contains special kinds of fat not found in other kinds of meat. These fats keep the brain cells flexible, so that one can keep thinking new ideas, remembering special things, and enjoying life. Without fish oil (really omega-3 fatty acids), the brain cells grow brittle and memory gets worse. As a rule of thumb, it is important to get steadily more with age:
